Window Box Card Ideas

Here's how you go about making the X Cut winning design.

Materials:
  • Cutting tools and mat
  • Tools that enable you to score
  • 250-300gsm card either plain or patterned
  • Any tools that will help you cut an aperture
  • Embellishments
  • Double sided tape
The great thing about this card style is that you can make it for any size envelope you have whether that's C4, C5, square or DL.
1) Start by measuring the size of the front of your card - *TIP: measure the envelope and take off a five or so millimetres so that you can fit he card into the envelope;

2) Now, add 5 cm to each side of your measurement. For example if your card width is 10cm then the total width now will be 20cm;

3) Cut two of these lengths (this will give you your back and front) and score as follows: 2.5cm and 5cm from each end. The best way to score is by using a tool like the Hougie Board or Crafters Companion. If you don't have these then a steel ruler and embossing tool will work well,just make sure when you score one side, you turn the card over and emboss the line again, this will make folding it much easier;

4) Now to cut your aperture out. You can cut any shape you like depending on what tools you have. I have the X-Cut circle cutting shapes which work brilliantly. Just centre your cut out as per the centre of your card (excluding you two 'side bits');

5) Next you decide, you can either decorate the back of your card now or when the card is assembled. It's really a personal choice so I suggest you have a play to see which one suits;

6) To assemble the card, firstly decide if you want a decorate border. I love the Martha Stewart punches so use these on the outside edges. You have to punch the front and back edges of your card so use the guide on your punch to ensure they'll line up when stuck together;

7) Take the front of your card (the one with the aperture) and fold the outer score line towards you; then fold the second score line (you remember - the one you did at 5cm) away from you. Go ahead and do this on the other side. Then onto the back of your card. Simply reverse the scoring, so first line away from you - second towards;

8) Put finger lift tape on the first scoring section on theinside of back of your card on both sides and stick the front to it. Once you stand it up you'll see how the sides concertina in which allows you to fit it inside the envelope.

9) If you haven't decorated and embellished yet then go ahead and have fun til your done!

I re did this card again recently for a friend's 60th Birthday.She loves lilac and pink and was delighted with her card. I think the best thing about hand crafted cards is our ability to personalise everything about them. There's no way this card is going into recycling!
